Hi Liz! I love this - my wife was just showing this to me yesterday, and I can't wait to see this technology can be integrated in classrooms.
This is a lot like augmented reality - I found a website giving free augmented reality manipulatives for education use (http://www.k12mobilelearning.com/?page_id=826).
Hopefully, some open-source community like Google Sketchup will tap into the community of QR Codes.

Thanks for your post!
Liz,
My ipod touch 4 just came in and it can read QR Codes. With a few ipods and a wireless signal QR Codes can finally become a powerful educational tool.
